About Me

Emily Avery Martin writes middle grade fiction and teaches 6th- to 8th-grade Language Arts and Creative Writing. She grew up sailing in the South Pacific with her parents and four siblings, and as an adult, crewed on several voyages in the Caribbean. Perhaps that is why four of her novels are set on the sea. Emily also writes poetry and travel memoir essays. Her short story, A Road to Connection, was published in a 2022 Chicken Soup for the Soul book.

Her favorite book as a kid was Treasure Island and any mystery she could get her hands. Emily is currently writing a spooky mystery.

When not writing, teaching, or reading, you can find her swimming in the ocean, sailing, surfing, or pretending to be a mermaid.

Emily lives in Capitola, California with her husband, three children, and a big Husky/Malamute named Tofu.

About Me

My Books

Ellie Ebersol Stays Afloat:

12-year-old budding herpetologist, Ellie Ebersol, wants one thing—to sail to Australia and see all the reptiles. But when a whale sinks her family’s sailboat, a mysterious sea captain who prattles with the wind, has a compass that talks, and a winking mermaid figurehead, rescues them. Ellie must figure out the strange happenings on the boat, but while Ellie investigates, she breaks the captain’s number one rule resulting in the appearance of a mermaid, a magical ring, and pirates who kidnap Mom and Dad. Before the pirate ship disappears from their radar, Ellie must set aside all logic and embrace magic or risk losing her family to dastardly pirates.

The Island of Lost Things:

When an eleven-year-old boy desperate to fit in draws himself onto a magical ship, he must discover the meaning of true friendship or risk dying a pirate.

By Way of the Sea:

After the death of her mum, a grieving 13-year-old moves onto a sailboat and must sail to safety after her father is injured on a stormy night at sea.
